The imagination
behind the stories

A. J. Evley was born in Croydon, South London in 1994. He has always been drawn to stories, though in the beginning they started in much smaller forms: fragments of poetry, short pieces scribbled instead of homework, ideas that were itching to get out of his head. He spent much of his younger years reading relentlessly, often refusing to put books down until they were finished, even if it meant staying up way past curfew.
He went on to study English Literature and Language at A level, where his focus sharpened and his instinct for creative writing began to take shape. It became less about telling stories, and more about understanding how and why they work.
He later trained in Paramedic Science and spent several years working in the ambulance service, where real stories unfolded in their absolute rawest forms: unpredictable, human, and often unfinished. It was a world that deepened his understanding of people, of pressure, and of the quiet moments that sit between the action. Not everything had an answer, but every moment carried weight, something that would later find its way into the stories he chose to tell.
Now focusing more fully on the creative side of life, his work spans novels, short stories, poetry, and other forms of storytelling, with a style that shifts in tone, genre, and perspective.
He has little interest in staying in one lane.
Stories, after all, rarely do.

FAQ
When was the moment you knew you had to take writing seriously?
When I had an idea to put my best friend into a story so that she could live on forever
Where do you get your ideas?
My first idea came to me as a dream. It was such a detailed dream that I could remember almost the whole thing when I woke up, and this isn't usually the case. So I wrote the dream down in my notes and that's pretty much how I've carried on getting my ideas!
How long have you been writing?
I've been writing all sorts in the form of short stories, poems, songs etc. most of my life, however writing novels has only been in the past year. I'm still very new to it!
I have an idea for a book, what do I do?
Sit down and write it! I know that sounds very generic and easier said than done, but that's the only way your idea for a book will actually become a book.
How do you research for your books?
Google is usually my go to. If Google doesn't have the answers then friends and family. If they are just as clueless then I reach out to the knowledgeable void on social media.
I've heard you do things other than writing, is that true?
I do! I play drums in a band called Jon and The Medics, and I also provide professional voiceovers. You can check these out here.
